About Cologne

Situated on the banks of the river Rhine, Cologne in the heart of Europe has been an important center for more than 2 millenia. Founded as a settlement to protect the Roman border in 38 B.C., it became quickly an important Roman city.

Today, traces of this period are still to be found at every turn. Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany with about 1 million inhabitants and is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The mighty gothic Dom - Cologne’s famous cathedral - dominates the center and the panorama of the city.
